Magistrate judge authority and discovery referral in the Northern District of Texas is governed by Local Rule 72.1 and 72.2 (effective September 2, 2025).
Objections to nondispositive magistrate orders (LR 72.1(a)-(b)): "Objections filed under Fed. R. Civ. P. 72(a) must be accompanied by a brief that sets forth the party's contentions of fact and/or law, and argument and authorities, and complies with LR 7.2." Response brief due within 21 days from date objections filed.
Objections to dispositive magistrate recommendations (LR 72.2(a)-(b)): Objections under FRCP 72(b)(2) must be accompanied by a brief complying with LR 7.2. Response brief must comply with LR 7.2.
Practical effect: Discovery disputes are referred to the assigned magistrate judge per FRCP 72 and 28 U.S.C. § 636. Parties must follow the presiding judge's and magistrate's individual procedures for discovery dispute resolution.
