WIPO data show China dominating global generative AI patent filings

Why it matters

China dominated global generative AI patenting from 2014 to 2023, accounting for more than 38,000 patent family publications—roughly 70 percent of worldwide filings in that period. The World Intellectual Property Organization released this data in July 2026. Tencent, Ping An Insurance Group, and Baidu led Chinese filers. The United States ranked second with 6,276 filings, meaning China filed approximately six times as many GenAI patents as its nearest competitor over the nine-year window.

The acceleration is striking. GenAI patent families roughly doubled between 2024 and 2025. China alone published over 43,000 patent families in that two-year span—exceeding its entire output from the prior decade. Within the technology mix, large language models have overtaken GANs as the dominant GenAI patent category. The precise breakdown of which Chinese companies are filing in 2024-2025 remains unclear.

Patent volume serves as a proxy for R&D spending, commercial intent, and technological positioning in foundational AI systems. For in-house counsel and policy practitioners, the WIPO data crystallizes what has been a diffuse competitive concern into measurable terms. The caveat: patent filings do not directly correlate with deployed product quality or market success. Still, the velocity and concentration of Chinese GenAI patenting warrant close monitoring by firms developing AI strategy or advising on technology policy.
